Indigenous American Cropping Systems

  • Saturday, May 6, 2017, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

The Three Sisters - winter squash, maize and climbing beans - are the main crops of various Native American groups, particularly the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) of the Finger Lakes region. Indigenous farmers in the northeast have been growing these crops for hundreds of years and continue to do so today.

Jane Mt. Pleasant (Tuscarora), Associate Professor at Cornell University, will give a presentation about Haudenosaunee agriculture, knowledge and the productivity of indigenous cropping systems.

This talk is hosted by CCE Tioga and theĀ Tioga History Museum alongside their current exhibit, "Born to Farm"! The "Born to Farm" exhibit is open at 110 Front St, Owego, NY on Wednesdays thru Saturdays, 10:00-4:00, until September 30.
